Trinity Western University men’s volleyball alumni player Josh Howatson of Victoria, B.C. has been named a finalist for the 2007 Sport BC’s University Athlete of the Year Award. University of British Columbia swimmer Brian Johns of Vancouver and Simon Fraser University softball player Melanie Matthews of Burnaby were the other two nominees. The winner will be announced at the 42nd annual Sport BC awards dinner on March 5, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver.
Howatson received the honour as a result of his incredible final year at TWU. In 2007, Howatson compiled the Canada West Male
Athlete of the Year award, the CIS men’s volleyball Player of the Year, a Canada West gold medal and a CIS bronze medal, and became the first ever TWU athlete to be awarded the BLG award for CIS Male Athlete of the Year.
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price of Williams Lake, B.C. has also been invited to the awards dinner. He, along with Brent Hayden (Mission) for swimming and Gary Reed (Victoria) for athletics, were named finalists for Senior Male Athlete of 2007. The 2007 Vancouver Giants (WHL Vancouver), the Kelly Scott Team (Westbank), as well as the Canadian National Rowing Team Men’s Eight (Victoria), were all named finalists for Team of the Year.
The Sport BC’s Athlete of the Year Awards ceremony is the longest-standing Canadian sport recognition event. Each year, awards are given out to athletes, coaches and officials in 16 different categories based on the winner’s remarkable performance and achievements as well as contribution to sport in British Columbia. Tickets for the dinner are currently on sale.
