Spartans Basketball Preview

WOMENS BASKETBALL

The Trinity Western University women’s basketball team will look a lot different then last year’s version. Not only will the Spartans be adding seven new faces to pair with the four returning members, but this season the Spartans will be looking at an up-tempo style of play.

“We are in a transition year this season and with the large number of new players it is hard to tell where we will end up,” said TWU Head Coach Danielle Gardner. “This group is hungry, there is lots of energy and they are pretty optimistic of what we can do.”

“We will be small and quick and push the tempo both offensively and defensively. The up-tempo style will be a significant change from the way we have played in the past,” said Gardner. “The question will be whether our posts can step up and learn to play at this pace.”

Returning from last year’s squad are guard Taylor Stuart, and forwards Kelly Konrad, Hearther Van Wieren, and Lauren Doubroff.

MENS BASKETBALL

This year’s men’s basketball squad will feature a team that will put their collective foot on the gas and not let it off until the final buzzer.

“I’m really excited about this year. We have been able to increase our size and depth from where we were,” said TWU Head Coach Stan Peters. “With these additions we believe we are twelve deep and we want to use that to our advantage by pushing the tempo of play. That should make it exciting and fun for our fans to come out and see a different style of play than they will see anywhere else in Canada West, and most likely in the whole of Canada.”

The Spartans have lost three major contributors from last season. Gone due to graduation are crowd favorites Logan Kitteringham and Steve Janzen, as well as the August announcement that 2002-03 All-Canadian Adam Friesen would not be returning. Despite the losses, Head Coach Stan Peters is a firm believer in the talented recruiting class he’s bringing in to complement the returning players.

“In our system we are emphasizing a team ego; it is not about the individual, it is about the group. It is not about other teams trying to stop one or two guys; it is about them trying to stop the twelve guys who are dressed that night,” added Peters.
