Amber’s Insight
We have a new squad this year, with four freshmen joining our team. It’s a completely different atmosphere than last year, requiring girls to take on new roles and new positions, which is both exciting and rewarding. Over the summer many of my team-mates had the opportunity of further developing their leadership and playing skills through playing on provincial teams, summer-games teams, and even on the national team. As for myself, I returned to my hometown in Three Hills, Alta., where I developed my triceps through painting, my gluteus maximus through driving a tractor, my latissimus dorsi by pulling weeds and my rectus abdominis while cooking. I’m just kidding, I was not as fortunate as some of my team-mates who played volleyball all summer, so instead I worked on my speed, agility and strength through weight training and conditioning.
Our team came together a week before school to begin our training camp and we’ve been practicing for about three weeks now. Practices are intense and focused on fundamentals, helping us get ready for the start of our season on Oct. 23. Another goal of preseason is bonding on and off the court. Our team bonded this past weekend as we took our annual camping trip. This year we went to Cultus Lake, then wrapped up the weekend by shooting a few thousand rounds of paint at each other. Our coach, Ryan Hofer, told us that our team does this not just because he loves it, but to stretch us out of our comfort zone. And trust me, when you get hit, it is definitely uncomfortable.
This coming weekend we go to Whistler where we will scrimmage against UBC. Thanks for reading, stay classy Trinity Western. Lata.
