Heartbreak in Alberta

The Spartans took on Fraser Valley this past week in Edmonton, Alberta and the Cascades were hungry to upset the reigning back-to-back CIS champions. The Spartans opened the scoring just five minutes into the game off a penalty shot from Spartans midfielder Melissa Mobilio. However, the Cascades quickly refocused their efforts in the 37th minute when Danielle Schmidt took over to tie the game at 1-1.

After halftime, Schmidt continued her strong crossing play when in the 53rd minute she found Ellen Kuyer’s head in the box that again beat Kristen Funk to put the Spartans down one goal with only 35 minutes to play. After excellent individual efforts from both teams, the Spartans finally managed to tie up the game with only seven minutes to go, when Alicia Tesan took a shot from the corner of the field that somehow beat Cascades goalkeeper

Chantelle Biagioni.

In overtime, the Spartans dominated the entire session, however, neither the Spartans nor the Cascades could find a way to score goals, taking the game into a nervewracking penalty kick situation. It was the Cascades who made good on all five of their attempts to beat Kristen Funk and the Spartans end

their season.

With disappointment all over the faces of the Spartans, their pursuit of their third consecutive championship ended. Taking the field the next afternoon, the Spartans were playing for pride in the bronze medal game. However the Spartans lost in PK’s and left Alberta without a medal.

Check back next week when head coach Graeme Roxburgh is interviewed one-on-one to discuss more about the Spartans overall efforts this season.
