Ladies: not always first
At the end of last year, a men’s club soccer team for Trinity Western University was started with great popularity. Tryouts were held at the start of this year and the Titans soccer team is now enjoying a great season. So what about the girls? Well, they too are now starting a club team. On Tuesday October 18, 25 girls met in the TWUSA office to discuss the possibilities and opportunities that this soccer team would have.
So how do these “club” teams differ from the varsity teams? Varsity teams like our Spartans volleyball, soccer, and basketball teams play other universities from all over Canada. Club teams like the Titans soccer, and the Titans and Bombers hockey teams are supported by TWU, but they are registered in a league that plays other lower mainland teams. These teams are organized by communities or churches and even some other universities.
The problem with the women’s club soccer team is that all the games are played on Sunday. As a part of our contract at TWU, we must leave Sunday as our day of rest to reflect and honor God. This is a debatable subject, but the point is that Recreation Services cannot start a team that plays at home on Sunday, for it would contradict this contract. Rec Services has come up with a proposal: home games for Titans women soccer will be played on Friday night at the south field. If the games are away, they will be played on Sunday, outside of TWU. This well-thought-out decision has opened the door for a women’s club team.
Girls can still come out and join this team. This is a competitive women’s soccer team, and they would love to have girls come out that are passionate and love playing soccer. There will only be a few practices and a few games to see how the team will do. After that a decision will be made as to whether the team will join halfway through the season (January) or wait with a few exhibition games to hold through till next year. All girls are welcome to come to the practices to get a feel for the team, or get out and have fun. If you want more info or times for the practices contact team manager Stephanie Orsi, Phone # 778-898-5124, Email: Stephanie.Orsi@agape.twu.ca
