Perfection on the pitch

Men’s spartans defeat Dinos and Pronghorns

Heading into their final home weekend of the season, the men’s Spartans soccer team needed points to continue their pursuit of making Canada West playoffs and the results were perfect. The Spartans opened play at Rogers Park on Friday night, taking on the Calgary Dinos, Canada’s ninth ranked team in the country. The Spartans defeated the Dinos 2-0 with goals from Chase Wickham and Cody Sterlau.

Wickham opened the scoring in stoppage time, near the end of the first half when Liam McAllister headed the ball over the Dinos’ defender, sending Wickham on a breakaway. Wickham found the back of the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

After halftime, the Spartans were sharper on the ball and helped eliminate the Dinos from the game when Cody Sterlau rocketed home the Spartans second goal in the 67th minute to give the Spartans their victory.

The Spartans were lead from the back by goalkeeper Andrew Fink who made his CIS-leading fifth clean sheet of the season. Fink turned away all four shots he faced in the game and was given the night off against the Spartans next test, the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

On Saturday, the Spartans took on the woeful Lethbridge Pronghorns, who entered the game with a record of 1-7-1. The night turned out to be a long one for the Pronghorns as they were easily defeated by the Spartans. The Spartans gave their fans something to cheer about early and often as the win moves the Spartans record to 5-2-3.

Danfi Parker opened the scoring in the game in the 36th minute and Andrew Costa had two goals, scoring them 10 minutes apart, that helped the Spartans defeat the Pronghorns 4-0. Jerome Lou added the fourth goal of the game later in the second half to seal the deal for TWU.

The back to back victories this weekend moved the Spartans past the Dinos for third overall in the Canada West standings, two points behind rival UBC. The Spartans next game is on the road against Fraser Valley next Saturday.
