Recapturing what we missed

Cross country and hockey highlights

There’s a plethora of sports that occurred around Trinity Western University this past weekend that needs to be caught up on and published, which is what we are going to do right now. The list below contains the main sporting events that you all missed while snacking on Thanksgiving dinner, and taking that extra holiday Monday that we likely all needed.

Spartans Cross Country:

On October 9th, the Spartans cross country team traveled down to Bellingham for the “Western Washington Tune-Up.” This event, which is hosted before the “Western Washington Invitational” on October 23rd, was the Spartans official first meet on the calendar and the results were favourable. In the men’s 8km event, Maihi Prajea finished the race 34th overall and landed TWU its first official time on the scoreboard. Prajea completed the race in a time of 28:10, almost a full minute ahead of Alex Pchenitchnikov, who placed 49th overall with a time of exactly 29:00 minutes. Six other Spartans finished within the 33-minute mark, completing a successful first event for the new program.

On the women’s side, the results were just as efficient in the 5km event. Marissa Ratzlaff continued her strong start to the season, finishing as TWU’s top woman on the team with a time of 20:36. Ratzlaff finished the event 39th overall, four minutes faster then teammates Karina Nagy, who placed 59th overall with a time of 24:35, and Breanne Friesen who came in one second later.

The Spartans will compete in the BC Athletic Club Championships a week after the Western Washington Tune-Up in Aldergrove on Saturday, October 30th.

Spartans Hockey:

The Spartans hockey team also played on October 9th, taking on the Okanagan College Coyotes for the second time this season. The Spartans entered their season with a record of 1-1-0 and hoped that Thanksgiving would be good for them.

Unfortunately, the Coyotes had other ideas. The Spartans kicked off the night from a goal by Tanner Redekop, scoring halfway through the first period to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. However, the game fell apart for the Spartans after the first. The Coyote’s scored three unanswered goals in the second period by Dekker Mende, Aaron Buat, and Brock Munro to give the Coyotes a 3-1 advantage heading into the final period.

In the third, Aaron Buat again scored for the Coyotes on the power play, ending the night for the Spartans with a score of 4-1. The loss drops the Spartans record to 1-2-0 on the season and will take on Simon Fraser University on October 22nd at the LEC.

Spartans Swimming:

On Saturday October 16th the Spartans had an in-house meet at Walnut Grove Community Centre. Their first official meet will be in Victoria on Saturday, October 30th.
