The sports slice

Well it’s the middle of February, which means all sports in the world are up and running again. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training this week, the NHL and NBA are in the midst of their seasons, and NFL fans are likely starting to wonder where Matt Cassel will be traded to in the off season. Anyway, with that in mind, here we go again.

Hey Jamieson,
Just responding to a blunder you made in your “Men of Steel” article.  Here’s some advice: you might want to take some geography lessons while you are at TWU.  Now for the lesson: Arizona has no coastline – most of the state is desert!  If you want to count that as just one very expansive beach with a lot of towel space, fine, but the fact remains that what generally is accepted as a definition of a beach does require some large body of water nearby.

So to make up for this grievous error in journalism, you should be forced (yes forced, because even though I am a huge country music fan, I’m going to guess that you are not) to listen to George Strait sing, “Ocean Front property in Arizona.”

I love the passion of sports fans, especially when they decide to slam your intelligence – or lack thereof – when a minor error in journalism occurs.

See, this is where I get you back. You cite me for a major error in journalism and then listen to “my dog died, its Sunday, I hate my ex-wife who is in prison for the second time,” country music, including a song with lyrics about an ocean in Arizona?

– In other important news, the NHL trade deadline is coming up soon (see “NHL trade deadline predictions” p. 19), while the NBA Trade deadline is coming up even sooner.
– Tiger Woods had his second child, a boy. Will he be the next Tiger, or will he play professional cricket and make that sport popular once again?
– In FIFA news, Canada fell two spots to 88th in the world, tied with Togo…Togo?
– Less than one year until the Vancouver Olympics. The Olympic Torch looks amazing.

Anyone who hates country music, email me. Any art majors want to talk about the torch design – maybe draw some up and we can put a picture in. Until next time, email jamieson.brooks[at]mytwu.ca.
