So here is the situation: This column was given to me for two reasons. First, so I can write about whatever I want, when I want. The other is a chance to give Trinity Western University’s sports fans the opportunity to get involved with sports section. In this column, I will write about stories or developments that are current in sports that have captured my attention.
Here is how you can get into the paper: respond to my column or write your own short thoughts to me by email, jamieson.brooks@mytwu.ca. I will then pick a few, add them into my next column, and respond. For instance, you may hear about my love of all Toronto sports teams. After the Leafs lose their 13th consecutive game, you could write, “Jamieson, the Leafs suck – always will.” Or if you have your own interest in a story – like “Do you think the Canucks will make the playoffs this year? I certainly do,” to which I will reply, “No.” The point is, Mars’ Hill loves interaction and this column is a way to bring together conflicts and arguments brought about by people’s passion for their hometown sports team.
So to begin, here is a short list of my opinions on current sporting developments:
- Mats Sundin will not become a Vancouver Canuck. There is no way he will sign a two year deal with them, nor should the Canucks want to spend $21 million on a player that is still undecided on if he wants to play hockey.
- Lance Armstrong is returning to cycling. He will compete in some smaller bicycle races before entering in the Tour De France. It’s too bad retired athletes don’t stay retired (see: Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Joe Montana)
- With the MLB season wrapping up, the Toronto Blue Jays are playing their normal above average September baseball to make up for the disappointing April to August stretch.
- TSN2 is a major letdown. As excited as I was for a channel of more sports, TSN2 is still negotiating contract deals with major cable and satellite providers to put their network on television. With all the hype about fans on the West Coast being able to watch live sports, and for tennis fans to not have to watch tape delays, TSN definitely jumped the gun.
- After returning from the Beijing Olympics in China, I can swear to you that Jamaican 100m, 200m and 4x100m gold medalist, Usain Bolt, is the fastest man I have ever seen live. It’s just too bad he only runs 75m before pounding his chest in victory.
