Titans capture league title

With a weekend of accomplishments, awards, and victory at Trinity Western University, many casual sports fans will look to the Spartans teams for creating the buzz around campus that is generally reserved for American schools celebrating their team successes. But while this weekend was a huge success, there was another story of excellence that occurred earlier in the week that seemed to have kick-started the winning momentum.
The 2010-2011 Trinity Western University men’s Titans soccer team claimed the Division 1 league title more then a week ago at Mcloud Athletic Park on a cold, rainy night. The Titans soccer team had been challenging their heated rivals: Fraser Valley Red Devils, Poco Revolution FC, Port Moody, and Sentinel FC, all season long for top spot in the division. But the Titans were able to use their experience and skill to defeat LUFC Dynamo 2-0 to take the regular season title and be promoted to the Premier Division next season.
The title means a lot to the boys in white and blue. For a team that is known as being as tight off the field as when actually playing together, the fulfillment of finally finishing first place has given the team a sense of accomplishment. Practicing two days a week for the past 3-4 years, the Titans squad had maintained a large number of core players throughout their run that will see numerous fourth year players leave.
Head coach Mike Teeter, who was absent from the game due to the birth of his first son, couldn’t have been happier with what the team had accomplished this season. Teeter noted, “I am very proud of the guys and how they conducted themselves on and off the field this year. My hope every year is that the guys will be competitive each time they step out on the pitch. As a coach you are glad to see your players rewarded for their hard work and dedication.”
But while their time may have concluded on the field, the Titans have left a major footprint in the league, both physically and in the hearts of their competitors. The Titans finished their season with a record of 13-3-2, good enough for 42 points. And with their championship, the team has earned the right to play in the top league of the Fraser Valley Soccer League, something that will soon be decided.
Teeter also praised the work of his senoirs adding, “the students graduating have all been involved with the team for many years. They will all be missed greatly not only for their soccer skills but for the leadership and strong character they brought to the team.”
However, while the Titans skill and passion for the game was always a strength, it was also a squad known for trying to squeeze the gap between religion and soccer through sportsmanship. With team devotions focusing around the idea of how to always represent the school, the “Lord’s Prayer” before each game, and the quest for opponent praise, the Titans may have found complete victory, both on and off the field. After clinching the league title, a forum post from an athlete already in the Premier Division wrote, “TWU is a great addition to the FVSL Premier league. As far as ‘quality’ is concerned, the league couldn’t ask for a better representative moving into the top flight.
As far as the Titans are concerned, mission accomplished.
