Tripping at the finish line
The Spartans are in the playoffs, but finished the season on a low
Women’s Soccer
With only a tie needed in one of their final two games to clinch first place in Canda West this past weekend, women’s soccer made good with a 0-0 tie against UFV Friday. The draw not only cliched first place, but also gave the women home-field advanage for the CW Championships this weekend.
Kristen Funk made four saves for the clean sheet in the tie. However, even though the team clinched the spot, they still had to face a strong UVic team vying for that very same spot in the Canada West finals. The Spartans played many of their reserves in hoping to keep key players healthy, and lost the game 2-0. The loss ends the women’s regular season, as they finish CW play with a first place finish and a 11-2-1 record.
The Spartans will now face Alberta in the Canada West semi final at TWU on Nov. 6.
Men’s Soccer
On a windy road trip through Alberta Halloween weekend, the men’s team could not find their stride. They needed to win both their games to have a chance of finishing first in CW and host the CW Championships, but with powerful weather and a poor start to the match against Lethbridge, the boys were handed a 2-1 loss. This along with a tie to the University of Calgary on Sunday afternoon earned the boys a second place finish in the CW standings. The Spartans will now face UVic on Friday night at UBC in the semi final of the Canada West playoffs.
