Volleyball sets pace for season
For the first time in six months, the nets were raised in the David E. Enarson Gymnasium for Spartan volleyball.
The week before, the season began on the road for both the men and women as they played against the University of Regina Cougars. The men were more successful as they completed the two game sweep with 3-2 and 3-0 wins. The women lost their opening matches 3-0 and 3-2.
The Spartan women are a solid mix of new players and seasoned veterans, making this squad a force to be reckoned with. With the power of Dayna JansenVanDoorn and new Spartan Carmen Dyck and the return of Kim Klassen, the Spartan women definitely have a shot at gaining a spot at Nationals.
On the men’s side, second-year Marc Howatson is back to continue his domination on the court along with the skilled play of Josh Doornenbal and Aaron Vandenbrink. Overall, the team is young – with only one graduating senior – but the future is bright for this Spartan team that is making a name for itself in the CIS.
On Friday night, the Calgary Dinos dominated the night as they came back from two sets down to beat the women 3-2, while the Spartan men were blanked 3-0. Saturday night was a complete turnaround as both teams defeated the Dinos three sets to one. With strong attacks and great recoveries, the Dinos had no chance at catching the home team.
This coming week is a bye for both teams. They will be back to host the University of Manitoba Bisons on Nov. 14 and 15. All in all when it comes to this year, the Spartan Faithful will not be disappointed.
