Women Fall Short

The third place Spartans women’s basketball team were in Abbotsford for two games versus the UCFV Cascades this past Friday and Saturday. The Spartans were looking for some redemption against the Cascades as TWU’s all-time record is 0-4 versus UCFV. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the game, up 14-10 after the first quarter, but the Cascades fought back to tie the game by halftime (26-26). TWU had an enormous third quarter, doubling their point total, closing out the frame 50-44. The Cascades had an even bigger fourth quarter, as they closed out the game 69-65. Spartans’ Heather Van Wieren led the way for TWU with 20 points, while Laura Craig finished the game with 15.

The following evening, TWU seemed to be a bit sluggish, and in turn lost the game 66-51. Van Wieren led the way offensively for TWU once again, compiling 8 points. Becky Atkinson and Katie Haworth had seven each. With the two losses, TWU is now 0-6 versus the UCFV Cascades. The Spartans close out the semester with a 7-5 record, which is third best in the Pacific Division. The women’s next two league games will be played at home on Friday, Jan. 4 and Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008. Both games are against the University of Victoria, who sit just four points behind the Spartans with an even 6-6 record. Game times begin at 6:00 p.m.
