What we love about TWU
LLC
The Laurentian Leadership Centre is a TWU satellite campus in Ottawa, where students from any program can spend a semester interning in high-profile political offices, corporations, and NGOs, among many other work placements while fulfilling core POLS, HIST and IDIS requirements. Plan to do it in your third or fourth year. Live in a mansion, skate the canal, experience the night-life, and maybe even meet the Prime Minister!
Collegiums
These spaces are a home-away-from-home for commuters on campus. For a low price per semester, collegium members have a place to hang out between classes, can get subsidized food and drinks through the “honour bar,” and can study, eat, sleep, play, and build relationships in a comfortable and familiar environment. Glenn Hansen, a dynamic and lively character, is the passionate and loving visionary behind the Marlie Snider Collegia Project. Recently the collegiums have also been opened to residents in evenings and on weekends.
11:07
Every other Friday the 11:07 comedy improv team puts on a sold-out show… at 11:07 p.m. Didn’t know Christians could be funny? This just in: they can. Check it out next time and laugh ‘til your sides hurt – but make sure you go early to get tickets – it sells out fast.
Motorcycle and scooter parking
Our motorcyclist and scooter-riding population save money and the environment by riding to school each day, braving the unpredictable weather and questionably-skilled drivers of the Lower Mainland. We want to give props to TWU for providing these individuals with free designated parking areas throughout campus.
Mars’ Hill
Artistic, fun, informative and expressive, our much-beloved bi-weekly newspaper is run by the students, for the students. Working for Mars’ Hill will give you great experience for the future and affords you some degree of fame and popularity; reading Mars’ Hill will undeniably make you a more intelligent, socially aware, and a civically responsible person.
Dr. Bob Doede
We love the philosophy that the ‘Doede’ teaches because it’s meant to be lived. We love the Doede because he values what he teaches and authentically relates to students with care. It’s no wonder that his classes are routinely acknowledged as life altering.
Community
Contrived or not, we love that community is an important buzzword at Trinity. Where else can a short walk lead to multiple waves, several ‘what’s ups?’ and if you’re lucky—a few ‘pounds’?
Dead Sea Scrolls Institute
Coupled with Trinity’s impressive Biblical Studies program, the Dead Sea Scrolls Institute leads annual symposia and provides our grad students with additional resources and scholarly research. What’s not to love, right?
Dorm Dates
Haven’t quite had a chance to meet that cute boy from the third floor yet? Been scoping that shy girl who lives in the window across from yours? Dorm Date to the rescue! Embrace the awkwardness of hanging out with twenty other strangers, bring a handful of your own dorm wingmen, and introduce yourself! Remember to photograph it, so you can put an album on Facebook and have the excuse to friend your future honey so you can tag them.
Pillar
A visually stunning masterpiece that’s like a scavenger hunt to find a photo of yourself in it. Remember your year in a creative, compact way and best of all? It’s free! Make sure to grab your copy at the end of the year.
[spaces]
The student-initiated literary journal that features the original writing, artwork and photography of TWU students. Get your own submission in to spaces.literaryjournal@gmail.com by November 19th and become a part of the legacy that is [spaces].
Senior Art Show
For four years they toil amidst paint and clay in the bowels of RNT and at the end of their degrees the art majors emerge with their exquisite pieces to display. It’s free, it’s local, and best of all it’s put on by our compadres. Inject yourself with a little culture and check out the senior art show this April.
Prof Interaction
#351, #352 . . . many of us chose Trinity to avoid being a faceless number in a massive auditorium hall. TWU is one of the rare higher education institutions that not only permits, but encourages students to visit their professors and get firsthand input on papers, difficult concepts, and the deeper meaning of life. It’s an education beyond the classroom and one that is more significant than the diploma we’ll receive at the end of our four years.
TWU Theatre
With five full-length plays happening in the TWU theatre during the 2009/10 season, there are many opportunities to check out the excellent quality of work that our theatre department produces. Hot on the heels of the successful Anatomy of Gray is Josh MacDonald’s Halo, opening November 24. Spread the love and support TWU arts by going to a show.
Qwanoes
At Qwanoes, student leaders get to relax and prepare for the coming year. This time of bonding and self-searching combines to form a delightful trip full of laughs and hugs. If only the whole year could be played out with such joy. We love you Qwanoes.
Clubs
Clubs give vibrant, meaningful and juicy life to the campus. They produce bodacious bonding. Each club caters to people’s passions, including their inclinations to science, social justice and knitting. Superficial? Maybe – but it’s a time well spent.
Mac
Mac volunteers his time at TWU to help out with custodial work. He is probably the sweetest guy on campus. We love Mac because he devotes his time to keep TWU looking clean. A friendly smile from him can make the day better.
TWU magazine
We love TWU magazine for its amazing stories about anyone and everything related to TWU. Its beautiful, colourful pages go hand-in-hand with its online component, and it unites TWU alumni, which we’ll all be soon, with the university.
Student Ministries
We love student ministries because there’s something for everyone and it’s for a good purpose. Student ministries are great because they combine meeting people, helping others and serving God. Whether you want to join a local student ministry or one that’s abroad, it’s bound to be a rewarding experience.
The Liberal Arts
Three cheers for the core requirements! Three cheers for getting a well-rounded education; for learning to think, problem solve, and draw connections beyond just our specific fields of study.
Peter
Everyone’s favourite caf guy. Peter has a big heart, a big smile, and all the girls know he’s a big flirt. He is the perfect person to cheer you up in the morning while you’re grabbing breakfast before an 8 a.m. class.
ACTS
The collection of seminaries on campus, the ACTS students among us are future pastors, cross-cultural ministry leaders, counsellors and Bible translators. Let’s try not to be jealous that they get to hang out in that gorgeous Graduate Collegium.
SLO-Week
There is nothing slow or relaxed about the Student Leader Orientation week. Everything an RA, CA or an SOS will need to know for the whole year is crammed into four or five days. The complimentary week-long food card and the formal commissioning banquet make it all worthwhile though.
RPC
Redeemer Pacific College is an amazing component to TWU. Even though it may be a bit of a walk, it’s a cozy classroom and offers classes from a Catholic perspective that you may not find at other Christian universities.
Travel Studies
Travel Studies are one of the most underrated parts of TWU. Take classes, make friends, and enjoy foreign culture for an experience of a lifetime and friends you will never forget.
Gender Institute
Established in 2007, this institute encourages interdisciplinary teaching, dialogue, research and collaboration in all academic fields. Its goal is to train leaders who will in turn foster restorative gendered relationships. Over the course of the semester the Institute hosts symposiums for the general public.
Spirit of Christmas
The fourth annual Christmas celebration will be held December 4th and 5th from 4:00 – 9:00pm at Trinity. This is a free weekend celebration for the community and for students. Enjoy the festively decorated campus, hot apple cider, numerous concerts, craft sale, petting zoo and the indoor theatrical nativity presentation.
Missions Trips
Interested in spending some time abroad helping others, exploring and learning? Upcoming Spring 2010 weeklong trips include New Orleans, Honolulu and Sacramento. Check out the mission trip possibilities at www.twu.ca/apply-global.
President Raymond
Years of experience as a university administrator and a unique ability to walk the line between being a visionary, while keeping in mind feasibility, give President Raymond all the tools to be this university’s leader. His approachable style and willingness to include students have quickly earned him the respect of the campus in his short time here.
The Spartans
Although MH published a satirical article last year on their over indulgence to wear their track suits, deep down we love ’em. Having arguably the most school spirit at our games in the county, its obvious the rest of the students do as well. Their success on the court and field as one of the top athletic programs in Canada doesn’t hurt either.
Babes
Just as look at these guys. Although these are a selected few of the babes TWU sports, there are numerous more. To say we have an attractive student population would be an understatement. Maybe its all that clean living that has so many students look so good. Keep up the good work guys and girls.
Cal Townsend
To know him is to love him. His POLS 101 class has become all but compulsory for undergrads. Those wishing to see why some refer to academia as just another strand of show-business need look no further than a Cal Townsend lecture. His passion for his students to start thinking helps drive the mission of the liberal arts and his passion for the lives of his students help make TWU a better place.
Vancouver
If you don’t mind driving the 30-45 minutes, a world-class city is right at our doorstep. Vancouver’s liveliness, culture and diversity continue to be a draw for TWU students year after year – no surprise there. Vancouver has become such a great destination, the entire world decided to play a bunch of sports there come February.
Rec Services
Like sports? People? The outdoors? Then you probably love Rec Services. Dale Baumgarter enthusiastically leads RS, which sponsors numerous teams and leagues for all students. RS remains a great way for all of us to get some exercise and build community.
Christ-Centred
TWU’s identity as a Christ-Centred university remains its most distinguishing feature. While many universities hold Christian traditions, few remain in their willingness to seek Christ and have Him be their guide. TWU is one of those universities, which is the reason a good portion of us decided to enroll.
Fort Langley
The quant village a long walk or short drive from campus remains one of the most picturesque destinations in Southwestern B.C. We can’t help but love Fort Langley’s laid back atmosphere and orchard-like streets.
Academic Rankings
For the forth year in a row, TWU scored an ‘A+’ ranking on overall quality of education in the Globe and Mail. We’ll let those results speak for themselves.
Chapel
With guest speakers that have included Bruxy Cavey and Tony Campolo in the last twelve months, Chapel remains a destination for numerous students every weekday at 11:00 a.m. The chapel worship teams are excellent and put most churches to shame as far as music goes. It’s ability to act as a place for centering and seeking is why we love Chapel.
Non-Smoking Campus
As smoking has declined in popularity amongst our culture, most governments have passed legislation barring it from public buildings. TWU has gone one step further, barring it from campus. Its unsightliness and penchant for turning walkways into wastebaskets have demonstrated this to be a prudent choice. Sorry smokers – you should quit anyway.
Tip-Off
The twice-weekly e-newsletter to all students, Carla Splinter’s Tip-Off keeps us in the loop. Have an event you’d like all of campus to know about? Let Carla in Student Life know and it’ll be in there. The Tip-Off is one of the best ways for staying connected with things happening at school which is why we love it.
