Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen
November 3, 2005
For fans of: The Arcade Fire
Arcade Fire, The Dears, and The Unicorns have been just a few drops in the bucket of the Quebec indie scene; get ready for the downpour. Wolf Parade is an eccentric, high-energy band that makes beauty out of chaos. Wolf Parade is what Interpol would have sounded like if they grew up on New Order instead of Joy Division. Apologies to the Queen Mary was largely influenced by Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, and even though they have only been together for two years, Wolf Parade has already opened for fellow Montrealers Arcade Fire, and for Brock’s band. Deep vocals are accompanied by a shockingly loud sound, and modish lyrics that would inspire even Ian Curtis to be carefree. Although lead vocals are split between bandmates Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug, the album doesn’t seem disjointed. If anything, their dual efforts brings a harmony to the album as Boeckner and Krug often back each other up and even yell at the same time. Almost every track off this new album will leave you as breathless as the yelling band members themselves, but the ones to watch for are the rousing “You are a Runner and I am my Fathers Son,” and the lyrically cynical “Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts.” Try to avoid the hype Wolf Parade will induce amongst the iPod masses, and be excited that you can jive to them now, before their probable appearance on the O.C. in the not-so-distant future.
Now you go...
Got something to say?
