What does it mean to be chaste?

Trish Buhler, 4th Year TRISH BUHLER, FOURTH YEAR
“To be sexually pure, and to be sexually pure means to not have sex before marriage - but I think God wants more than that from us. He wants us to be pure in every part of our lives. He wants our tongues to be chaste. He wants our eyes to be chaste, so to not let any impurity come into our lives. As Christians, we are made new and pure in Christ, so it is no longer part of our nature.”

Professor Sara Pearson, English DepartmentPROFESSOR SARA PEARSON, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
“I would say that chastity is related to integrity, and that to be chaste is to have integrity in a sexual relationship, whether that be not having other sexual relationships before entering a marital one or maintaining sexual integrity if you are in a marital relationship. For today, chastity, like integrity, needs to spring from within one’s own personal desires rather than being imposed. Imposing chastity doesn’t work as past generations have tried to do.”

Dan O'Reilly, 3rd Year DAN O’REILLY, THIRD YEAR
“I don’t think you can say chastity means not making out. It obviously includes not having sex. But I think that is a byproduct of our heart condition. It’s not what you can get away with. If your relationship with the Lord is great, it becomes less of a struggle. You are more apt to respect each other and chastity is then the result of this right relationship.”

Malorie Breukelman, 1st Year MALORIE BREUKELMAN, FIRST YEAR
“I think it means to be pure and refrain from sexual immorality to be modest in dress. Mostly they tell girls to be chaste, not guys. Guys should be chaste too!”

Chris Hansen, 4th Year CHRIS HANSEN, FOURTH YEAR
“I think it’s all about self-control because we all have sexual desires and we all have feelings towards the opposite sex. It’s not necessarily about the actions; it’s about keeping a tight rein on your thoughts. It’s not about indulgence.”

Now you go...
