The Trinity Western University Spartans women’s basketball team gave it all they had in their final game of the 2007-2008 regular season. TWU managed to hold the top-ranked Simon Fraser University Clan to just 39 per cent shooting, but could not knock off the mighty Clan (22-1), dropping a 76-57 decision in Burnaby.
After starting the game off very slowly, the Spartans picked up the pace. SFU led the game 24-11 at the end of the first quarter, but the second and third frames were very tight (15-15, 19-20). The closest the women would get was midway through the third in which they pulled within eight points (44-36); however, the Clan extended their lead to 17 with a furious offensive push. The fourth quarter opened up a bit more for the Clan, as they went on to win the quarter 17-12, and the game 76-57.
TWU’s Lauren Doubroff of Surrey, B.C. led the Spartans in the offensive department with 11 points, while Laura Craig of Delta, B.C. finished the game with nine points, six rebounds and two assists. Katie Haworth of Gresham, OR managed eight points while registering one assist.
After a promising start to the season – at one point they boasted an impressive 7-3 record – the women finished the season on a seven game losing skid, with their last win coming over Thompson Rivers University on Jan. 12 (74-60). In fact, since November 30 of last year, the Spartans women posted a lowly 1-12 record and were outscored 950-759 over those last 13 games.
As a result, TWU finishes the season with an 8-15 record and misses the playoffs for the second year in a row, and the third time in the past four seasons.
On the positive end of things, the Spartans finish the 2007-2008 campaign with a club record eight wins, while TWU’s Corina Reimer set a Spartan record for rebounds in a single season with 175 (69-106). She also set a Spartan single-season record with 18 blocks.
