STUDENTS CHERISH THE UNION OF TALENT AND COMEDY

March 23, 2006

As the doors opened at 9 pm last Wednesday, hundreds of impatient TWU students filed into the blue and pink balloon-clad gymnasium for the 2006 Spring Fever Hootenanny.

Bemused by the wedding theme, the audience squeezed between tulle and over silk flowers as Keith Urban, Smash Mouth, and the Backstreet Boys blared through the speakers. Soon enough, host Rachel Blair bounced onto stage dressed in an outdated wedding gown to open the evening with a heart- and gut-wrenching rendition of “Get Engaged,” an altered version of Kelly Clarkson’s song “Break Away.”

Not only was the pre-performance music eclectic: the entertainment ranged from Nintendo characters, a Fiddler on the Roof spoof, an out-of-context Lord of the Rings scene and an accordion. Four of the twelve acts were raps, complete with choreography.

The closing routine consisted of Kevan Gilbert and Harrison Mooney who expressed their past-Hootenanny bitterness in the form of a rap originally scripted and set to Gilbert’s music. Their final shout out of “good night” saw the entire auditorium stand to their feet in applause.

The judges too were amused and showed their approval by presenting the two with the first place cash prize of $300.

In second and third place—winnings of $200 and $100, respectively—were Chris Nash and Will Graham’s Band doing “My Pants,” and James Moes and Josh Fulmore’s “Gollum Needs Therapy.”

Fourth place went to “Beastie Boys are From Space” (much to the dismay of the booing crowd), and fifth place to “Princess Peach Rap.”

Overall, the night ended happily ever after, with the audience to have and to hold from this day forward with the memories of talented performers in their minds.

The $2 entrance donation will support The Wellspring Foundation which operates to bring quality Christian education into Rwanda and heads up developmental projects and programs.
